A trip to Kosciusko, Mississippi

Sandy and I took a trip to Kosciusko, Mississippi, which is located on the southern border of the Mississippi Hills and sits along the Natchez Trace Parkway. Kosciusko is known as the birthplace of media icon Oprah Winfrey and James Meredith, the first African American student admitted to the University of Mississippi. Oprah first spoke in public at the church near where she was born.

Named after Polish General Tadeusz Kościuszko, who fought in the American Revolutionary War, the city is also known as the “Beehive of the Hills.” This nickname reflects the bustling industrial and retail trade that characterized the city during its early years. It is notable that there is a beehive structure at each corner of the courthouse downtown. Also, the Mississippi Federation of Women's Clubs was founded here.
